Prototyping and engineering a product is a critical phase that bridges the gap between an idea and its technical realization. But it's also about validating its real-world viability and appeal.

During that phase, it's essential to move fast with comprehensive engineering know-how in order to deliver new iterations of the product. Through fast prototyping of your concept until the alpha and beta testing phase with 1, 10 or 100 units, we can test its true value and appeal in real conditions.

With these elements in place, fast prototyping and iterative product engineering can provide a solid foundation for the subsequent stages of product industrialization.

It's time to get your product ready for large-scale production...

You need to reengineer your project and find the right partners to scale the production.

R&D / POC

You need to get your product from an idea to a reality:
- Conduct an in-depth technical study to validate project feasibility
- Define functional and technical requirements
- Shape concepts, prototype and test them

A prototype is worth a thousand meetings

Prototyping and engineering a product are pivotal stages in transitioning from a concept to reality, demanding a nuanced approach and comprehensive understanding. Here are the significant facets to be mindful of:

  • Cross-Disciplinary Expertise: Bringing a product to life often requires proficiency in a range of fields including mechanics, electronics, firmware, cloud, and software. Seamless collaboration across these domains ensures a holistic and efficient development process.
  • Design Iterations: A prototype is often a rudimentary representation of the final product. Its continual refinement is essential to meet market needs and manufacturability.
  • Material and Component Testing: The materials apt for prototyping might not always align with the final product's requirements. Evaluating their durability, cost-effectiveness, and suitability is a step that can't be skipped.
  • Integration Challenges: The evolution of a prototype can present challenges, especially when integrating varied components, be it in electronics, firmware, or mechanics.
  • Functionality Validation: It's paramount that the prototype not only exists but also operates as intended, achieving the set performance criteria.
  • Manufacturability: Beyond functioning, a product needs to be designed with reliable and efficient mass production in mind.
  • Cost Analysis: As we transition from prototype to production, it's essential to scrutinize the financial viability, especially as complexities might introduce unforeseen costs.
  • Safety and Compliance: Depending on your product, compliance with safety standards and obtaining the necessary certifications can be non-negotiable.
  • Feedback and Redesign: Extracting feedback from user testing and pivoting the design accordingly ensures the end product is both user-centric and market-ready.
  • Environmental Considerations: Right from this phase, the environmental footprint—from the choice of materials to energy consumption—should be front and center in our considerations.

For a more detailed exploration of these stages, we invite you to check this article about functional prototyping and iterations.

How long does the prototyping phase usually take?
Indeed it varies based on product complexity, but we always deliver tangible results every 5 weeks. No matter your project complexity, in a matter of weeks you will get results. Then the whole process can last up to 6 months.
How do POC, prototype, MVP, and product differ?
Regardless of the name of your "product", we like to say that prototypes aim to answer specific questions, be it technical feasibility or market appeal for example. We usually start with a POC to validate a technical concept and its feasibility. Then we iterate through several prototypes until we reach a satisfactory version that we can launch to real users, this is what we call a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).
How much does prototyping and product engineering cost with Sparkmate?
We recommend starting with a technical audit and study, allowing us to offer a tailored estimate and roadmap for your unique project. Then we work with 5-week iteration so you get tangible results before investing 100K+ USD on your R&D project.
What happens if the prototype doesn't meet expectations?
If a prototype falls short, we analyze feedback and technical testing results, we identify areas of improvement, and iterate on the design. Our goal is to continually refine until we achieve the desired outcome.
